Trekking itineraries and naturalistic excursions across the hinterland of Romagna
Monte Carpegna, the mountain of Marco Pantani
Mount Carpegna, which rises in the heart of Rimini's hinterland, is the highest mountain of the whole coastal area. Its popularity is due to the fact it was Marco Pantani's favourite training ground. Situated halfway between the provinces of Pesaro Urbino and Rimini and included in the protected area of the natural regional park Sasso Simone and Simoncello, Mount Carpegna is the ideal holiday destination for those interested in performing trekking, since it gathers thick woods, green pastures and fascinating valleys, and the enchanting Retreat of Madonna del Faggio, which stands on the top of the mountain, boasts breathtaking views over the underlying landscapes.
The top of Mount Carpegna can be reached through three different itineraries. Please remember to take a map with you.
Villagrande di Montecopiolo > Trabocchetto Pass > Fontanelle Shelter > Retreat of Mount Carpegna
- Difficulty: E for amateur excursionists.
- Rise: 270 metres.
- Time: 4h.
Departure:Villagrande's cemetery. Take the 105 CAI path to Trabocchetto Pass. Head to Fontanelle Shelter then take the 102 CAI path up to the retreat. Easy but long path. Excursionists will have the possibility to have lunch at the shelter while enjoying sweeping views over the underlying landscapes.
Scavolino > Passo dei Ladri > Trabocchetto Pass > Scavolino
- Difficulty: EE for expert excursionists.
- Rise: 510 metres.
- Time: 4.30h .
The most difficult itinerary to reach the top of the mountain should be covered in summer. In winter, snow may make it dangerous. Departure: Scavolino. Head left of the church; after fifty metres, turn right along the 102 CAI path. Once reached Passo dei Ladri you can come back to Scavolino or reach the pastures of the retreat. To come back from Passo dei Ladri, take the 105 CAI path up to Trabocchetto Pass, then head along the 102A CAI path to Scavolino.
Cippo > Trabocchino Pass > Retreat of Mount Carpegna
- Difficulty: E for amateur excursionists.
- Rise: 300 metres.
- Time: 1h.
Cippo, which is situated some winding roads over Carpegna's municipality (PU), was the place where Pantani concluded his training sessions. The great athlete is celebrated by a huge commemorative monument. Take the 101 CAI path, which is very steep but quite short, which leads to the lush meadows which carpet the top of Mount Carpegna. From Trabocchino Pass, come back along the scenic 104 path.
Regional Natural Park Sasso Simone and Simoncello
The so-called Sassi Simone and Simoncello are two impressive calcareous rocks which are covered by thick forests of beech-trees, turkey oaks and hornbeams. The top of both Sassi is occupied by two large flat "plateaus", which boast breathtaking views over the underlying landscapes.
There are two possible itineraries to reach the Sassi, which are able to suit even the most demanding requirements of different types of excursionists. Please remember to take a map with you.
Miratoio > Sasso Simone
- Difficulty: E for amateur excursionists.
- Rise: 400 metres.
- Time: 4.30h.
Departure: Miratoio, a lovely hamlet of the municipality of Pennabilli (PU). Take the 17 CAI path which runs along Poggio di Miratoio. Head along Sasso Rosso and Banditella. Once reached the junction with 118 CAI path, continue along the 17 CAI path to the so-called "cancellino" (the pass between the two Sassi), and the top of Sasso Simone.
Passo Cantoniera > Sasso Simone
- Difficulty: T/E for tourists and excursionists.
- Rise: 200 metres.
- Time: 2h.
Departure: Equipped area of Passo Cantoniera. Take the 118 CAI path, which leads to the top of Sasso Simone merging the 17 CAI path.
