CERVIA - MILANO MARITTIMA Population: 8.000 l Area: 20,20 km l Seaside resort

Cervia’s history is closely connected to the production of salt. Of antique origin, probably Greek, the small town was located a few kilometres from the present coastline, amid the salt basins. Between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the old town of CERVIA was completely rebuilt on the basis of an original urban plan, both for health reasons (malaria raged in the stagnant water) as well as for the storing and distribution of salt. From the same age are the magnificent and impressive Salt Storage Rooms each with a capacity to house 10,000 tons of salt, the San Michele Tower and the historical centre encircled by the
Salt Collecters’ houses. There is also the possibility to have guided tours of the salt basins and the museum dedicated to the civilization of salt. Nowadays, Cervia, with its touristic resorts Milano Marittima, Tagliata and Pinarella, boasts a huge accommodation industry, hosting 4 million visitors a year. A wide range of touristic and commercial services marks Cervia’s reality: over 400 hotels, 181 restaurants and pizzerias, 199 bars, discos and dancing halls, plenty of shops and boutiques, which, in the different shopping areas are the traditonal destination for walking and shopping.
With over 9 kilometres of fine sandy beaches, Cervia is especially suitable for families with children. First class services offered by the 236 beach areas and animation activities on the beach are the characteristics of a typical “active holiday” stay. The old salt basins, covering 827 hectares, beyond producing 20,000 tons of salt, constitute a natural reserve where herons, wild ducks, avocette, cavalieri d’Italia and plenty of other bird speciesnest.
The Cervia Salt Basins Visitor’s Centre is part of the southern portion of the Po Delta Regional Park. The Salt Civilization Museum (in the 17th century the Salt Storage Room) and the ancient Camillone Salt Basin (a kind of open-air Salt Museum) attract tourists and school groups on guided tours every year. In Cervia resides the seat of the Cervia Environment Foundation (an internationally famous Centre for environmental documentation), which annually awards prizes to those people who have distinguished themselves in the environmental sector. Among those who have been awarded are Konrad Lorenz, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Piero Angela, Folco Quilici and Sting.
